Execution Principles

Control, Command, Space, Divide, Capitalize — the five governing conditions of all operations in all domains.

"Plans are worthless, but planning is everything."

— Dwight D. Eisenhower, Speech to the National Defense Executive Reserve Conference, 1957
Doctrine note: The Execution Principles are not the plan — they are the conditions that determine whether any plan can be executed correctly. A plan that violates an Execution Principle does not need a better plan. It needs the principle restored.

The Execution Principles govern all operations across all four domains. They are not phase-specific — they apply continuously, from the first move through the conversion. They are not domain-specific — they apply in chess, warfare, politics, and economics by the same logic. Violation of any one creates cascading pressure on the others.

  • ControlThe degree to which the practitioner determines the terms of the engagement — tempo, terrain, agenda, and conditions. Control is established before the engagement, not during it. In chess: occupy key terrain before it is contested. In politics: set the negotiation terrain before the first exchange. In economics: build the moat before the competition recognizes its value.
  • CommandThe clarity and authority of direction within the force. Every degree of command failure is a degree of strategic failure. The best strategy produces no better results than the layer transmitting it. Before evaluating the strategy, evaluate Command. If Command is the Limiting Element — fix Command first.
  • SpaceThe operational room within which the force maneuvers — physical, temporal, and relational. The most common Space violation: premature commitment, consuming operational room before the engagement requires it. Preserve Space. It is the preservation of the capacity to act when acting becomes optimal.
  • DivideThe separation of opposing forces so they cannot concentrate full strength against a single point. Target what holds the opposing force together — the Tao — not the force itself. A force whose unity of purpose has been broken does not need to be defeated. It defeats itself.
  • CapitalizeThe conversion of advantage into durable structural position — pressing the gain at the moment of gaining it. An advantage not pressed is an advantage returned. The opponent who is not pressed after losing ground will recover it. Press immediately. Lock in results before recovery is possible.
  • "Select the correct play and violate a principle — and the play fails anyway. The play is the strategy. The Execution Principles are how the play is run."

    Execution Principles

The five Execution Principles are the operational layer connecting strategy to result. In chess, warfare, politics, economics — the same five conditions govern whether the selected play produces the intended outcome. The practitioner who internalizes all five applies them across every domain simultaneously.
